Trocaz Pigeon
Columba trocaz

Once considered a threatened species, this endemic is now estimated at 7000-10,000 pairs on the island. They occur probably everywhere in suitable habitat (laurel forest), but they have also been recorded at lower altitudes. The best place to see them is without doubt the valley in which Fajã Nogueira lies. This is the same valley that is overlooked when you experience the view from the renowned site Balcões. With some luck, you will get much better views here, though, than on the popular (and therefore often crowded) watchpoint. For more information, see the Madeira website.
