While watching a stunning summer-plumaged American Golden Plover Pluvialis dominica, a sharp-eyed observer noticed this dark little gull amongst a small group of Common L. canus and Black-headed Gulls L. ridibundus. Everybody present must have been totally amazed to see that this actually was a Franklin's Gull L. pipixcan, only the fourth for The Netherlands and the first fully summer-plumaged bird to be seen here alive!
Fortunately it was still there the following morning (although the plover had gone), allowing me to make these video shots, which show most of the field characters. The extensive preening by the bird yielded for instance good views of the wing pattern and the greyish central tail.
