Eagle Owls have nested in The Netherlands irregularly during the 1990s and perhaps already during the 1980s. Before that only rumours told of the occurrence of this species in southern Limburg. The birds probably originate from a reintroduction project in the German Eifel mountains, which apparently was worth all the effort. They now nest every year in the mining area in the former St. Pietersberg near Maastricht.

Eagle Owl - Oehoe Bubo bubo ;

14 February 1988, Cadier en Keer Li
The first twitchable Eagle Owl in this area was a female that showed up every evening in an abandoned quarry near Cadier en Keer, not far from Maastricht. Although seen only from a distance, it was very distinctive, as it called in a peculiar way. I managed to record this, click here for an impression. Copyright ©Teus Luijendijk 2001
